Statement

I photograph places while they are being changed, and objects after the people who used them have left the room. The work is descriptive rather than expressive: frontal, evenly lit where the light allows it, and made with as little intervention as I can manage. Nothing is arranged.

Working this way means accepting that a single frame is rarely the unit of meaning. A place under construction only becomes legible across dozens of exposures made over years, from consistent distances, in comparable conditions. What one photograph offers as an observation, a sequence can offer as a record. I am interested in the second thing.

I live and work in Langley, British Columbia, on the unceded territories of the Kwantlen, Katzie, Matsqui, and Semiahmoo peoples.

Biography

Chad Montgomery is a photographer based in Langley, British Columbia. His current work documents the Fraser Valley through periods of infrastructure change, using the survey conventions of topographic photography — fixed vantage points, descriptive framing, and repeated return visits.

He works primarily in colour, and prints his own work.
